Former city councilwoman dying, reveals she's a lesbian

It’s not easy

The Seattle Times reports that former Seattle City Councilwoman Cheryl Chow is dying and that she regrets keeping secret her entire life that she is a lesbian — I would like to thank her [“Chow says she’s dying, lesbian,” NWWednesday, Aug. 22].

It is not easy coming out at any stage of your life, especially for those of us who grew up surrounded by messages of hate; it is not easy coming out when all you see on television are gay stereotypes in sitcoms; it is not easy coming out when you see a military that awards a medal for killing one human, and yet a discharge for loving another; it is not easy coming out when some schools and organizations like the Boy Scouts don’t want you around their children; it is not easy coming out when you hear politicians use the words “homosexual” and “child molester” in the same sentence; it is not easy coming out when your church tells you that you are evil and will certainly go to hell; and, it is not easy knowing that you will never marry or have children and that you may die alone.

Times have gotten better and I’m happy and thankful that Chow has now come out as a gay woman. My hope for her now is that medical treatments will help her live a long life, and that she will have someone special to share it with.

— Steve Kinholt, Seattle
