Washington State Ferries is seeking naming suggestions for two new ferries
Consider Thomas Minor Pelly for the ferry name
Name a Washington state ferry for Ivar Haglund? I think we can do better [“Keep clam: We need ferry with Ivar’s name on it,” News, Aug. 12]. Years from now, young people riding the ferry Ivar Haglund will Google his name and learn that he was a successful entrepreneur, skilled at self promotion.
Or, we might honor the life of someone who made Washington a better place. I would propose that we consider someone like Thomas Minor Pelly. Never heard of him? That’s exactly my point. People riding the ferry Thomas Pelly might Google his name, and learn about a 10-term congressional representative for King and Kitsap counties (the ferry system ties them together).
Pelly introduced the bill to create North Cascades National Park, and he was a strong proponent for the creation of the Environmental Protection Agency. Pelly worked quietly and effectively to make our country a better (and cleaner) nation.
A ferry named Thomas Minor Pelly would be a small thanks for his service. More importantly though, is that this remembrance might inspire a young person to devote his/her life to political service in order to continue to work for a clean environment and for wilderness areas to be set aside and protected for future generations.
I would ask, do we need more successful entrepreneurs, or do we need more people like Thomas Minor Pelly?
