How a true liberal should react

I too disagree with the statement against gay marriage by the president of Chick-fil-A, but I would defend with my life his right to say it. [“Chick-fil-A’s stance runs counter to corporate trend,” News, Aug. 4.]

True liberals don’t merely defend their own favorite positions. True liberals defend the First Amendment rights of those with whom they adamantly disagree. If they don’t, their “liberalism” loses its very soul.

An obscene display

I walked past a woman with a child this morning, sleeping on a sidewalk, in downtown Seattle. They were huddled up against a building, not even in a doorway, under a bunch of blankets. All I could think was, thank God Chick-fil-A is pro-marriage as defined by the Bible.

I’m sure this woman and child would be happy to hear about how many people stood in line to show their support for Chick-fil-A “in the name of God.” She’d probably be thrilled to know how much money was spent on chicken sandwiches, not to mention the amount of press coverage this story has gotten recently.

This is obscene! The only reason why so many people turned out to support Chick-fil-A was because it was convenient and they got a meal out of it. Americans are great at giving of their time and treasures when there’s something in it for them or when it’s convenient.

If even half the effort, and money, it took to stand in line at a Chick-fil-A was dedicated to helping people like this woman and her child, just imagine what a difference that would mean for discarded people everywhere!
