Housing prices on the rise

Housing market optimism

It was heartening to read your June 7 editorial “Housing prices: a hopeful rise after a necessary fall” [seattletimes.com]. It expressed relief at the general return to sanity in housing prices; prices potentially affordable to many folks who live and work in our community, who have been previously priced out of an unreasonably increasing market.

Creating permanently affordable homeownership opportunities in Seattle has been the work of Homestead Community Land Trust for the past 20 years. We partner with working families to make homes sustainably affordable to them and to keep them affordable at resale for all future eligible homebuyers. Yes, our homeowners gain equity and stability, but we keep, as you call it, “the fever of speculation” out of homeownership.

Our community is stronger and our neighborhoods more vibrant when middle-income, working families can afford to purchase — and afford to stay in — their homes. While sadly, this downturn leaves many current homeowners stuck, even with prices down there are many who still cannot afford to buy. We can help! Your piece was a refreshing and timely perspective on “dire” housing news.

— Sheldon Cooper, executive director, Homestead Community Land Trust, Seattle
