Public has not forgotten

After the fourth reading of Danny Westneat’s column, “Tow lobby puts hook on fee caps,” I can only conclude that our political system is no longer set up to protect the average American. [NWSunday, April 8.]

Excessive towing charges is an issue that clearly resonates with the public; our politicians jumped on it, were lobbied upon and quietly gave up, hoping that the public would soon forget. Westneat did not and exposed this as a specific example of the sad state of affairs, for all of us to see.

Isn’t this an issue that should have garnered bipartisan support and passed as a matter of course? Is the Towing and Recovery Association so powerful that it can stop our state legislators? How many of our politicians have or will be receiving financial support for stopping this legislation? Everyone should demand answers to these questions.

How can our politicians solve the critical and complex problems facing our state when they allow themselves to get bogged down on a simple case of defrauding of the public? Do they really believe that the public is so slow and forgetful that they have a free ride?

Westneat didn’t forget. Neither should we.
