Israel given written guarantee from U.S.

Posted by Letters editor

Moratorium serves Israel’s interests only

Once again, I am shocked and dismayed at America’s participation and complicity in the subjugation of Palestine [“Private use of public land: Who’s watching waterfront?” page one, Nov. 22].

The proposed deal is an affront to U.S. mediation in the Middle East and to the Palestinians themselves. If you give them (Israel) a 90-day moratorium on state-sponsored settlement — which violates the fourth Geneva Convention — we will throw in 20 additional F-35s, and never broach the subject again? I can see what Israel gets, but what do we get?

The peace process is a total joke: The end-stage negotiations — borders and the refugee “problem” — are insoluble to the Israeli state. What we are left with is a bully — that we arm; that feels free to bomb Lebanon into oblivion; that has rather broad Mediterranean claims; and never lets go of its suzerainty in the regions it says it gives back.

The root problem is that Israel and Israelis know nothing of the cessation of hostilities, know nothing of a “peace.”

Take a cue from Churchill: “In war, resolution; In victory, magnanimity.”
