PHOENIX — Steve Nash is going to the Los Angeles Lakers, a Pacific Division rival the two-time MVP point guard tried so hard to beat, with little success, in his eight seasons with the Phoenix Suns.

At Nash's request, the Lakers and Suns reached a sign-and-trade deal, with Los Angeles using the trade exception it got when it sent Lamar Odom to Dallas to facilitate the transaction.

The 38-year-old Nash, who spent the past eight seasons with the Suns, was a free agent but a sign-and-trade agreement was necessary for the Lakers to afford him. He agreed to a three-year, $27 million contract. In return, the Suns get four draft picks — first-rounders in 2013 and 2015 and second-rounders in 2013 and 2014.

Hawes staying

with Sixers

The Philadelphia 76ers agreed on a $13 million, two-year deal with Spencer Hawes, the former Huskies center from Seattle Prep.

Hawes received interest from other teams, including Portland and Miami. According to sources with knowledge of the conversations, however, Hawes wanted to return to Philadelphia, the Inquirer reported.

Notes

• Star point guard Deron Williams agreed to a $98 million, five-year deal to remain with the Brooklyn Nets, ESPN reported.

• The Houston Rockets plan to offer a contract to New York Knicks guard Jeremy Lin, according to a report by the New York Post. The Rockets will offer Lin a backloaded deal worth roughly $30 million over four years.

• Free-agent forward Michael Beasley agreed to a two-year, $18 million deal with the Phoenix Suns.

• Former Mercer Island High School product Quin Snyder is one of four men the Orlando Magic plan to interview for their head-coaching vacancy.
