The Atlanta Hawks have agreed to deal All-Star guard Joe Johnson to the Brooklyn Nets and trade forward Marvin Williams of Bremerton to the Utah Jazz, according to multiple media reports.
In exchange for Johnson, 31, Atlanta will receive Anthony Morrow, Jordan Farmar, ex-Sonic Johan Petro, Jordan Williams and DeShawn Stevenson, plus the Houston Rockets' lottery-protected first-round draft pick in 2013.
For the Hawks, that trade is little more than a salary dump — a means to unload the four years and $89.3 million left on Johnson's contract.
Marvin Williams, 26, will be sent to the Jazz for guard Devin Harris.
Williams averaged 10.2 points and 5.2 rebounds last season, output below what one would expect from a player who went second overall in the 2005 draft. On the plus side, he made a career-high 38.9 percent of his three-point shots last season.
The Nets completed the trade for Johnson as they were preparing to meet with Deron Williams, their star point guard, to sell him on a future in Brooklyn.
Deron Williams, a free agent, is also being courted by the Dallas Mavericks, who made their pitch to the 28-year-old earlier in the day.
The Nets had hoped to pair Deron Williams with Dwight Howard, the Orlando center, who has lobbied for a trade to Brooklyn. But the teams never found the right deal, and the trade for Johnson probably closes that door.
Notes
• Ex-Kentucky standout Anthony Davis, the first player taken in Thursday's draft, sprained his left ankle at the New Orleans Hornets' training center Saturday. The injury will have to be evaluated before he can be cleared to practice with the U.S. team. He is being considered for the Olympic squad.
• Scott Brooks, 46, has signed a multiyear extension to return as coach of the Oklahoma City Thunder, which lost to the Miami Heat in the NBA Finals.
