WASHINGTON —

Authorities have recovered a body from the Potomac River in the Washington, D.C., area after a car apparently went off a parkway and plunged into the water.

The operator of a river tour boat called authorities around midday Sunday and said a car was submerged in the river near the George Washington Memorial Parkway with a person visible inside. Divers recovered the body later Sunday. Authorities did not immediately release the identity of the victim.

It was not clear when the car went in the water or what caused it to leave the roadway.
