EVERETT, Wash. —

The aircraft carrier Nimitz has returned to its home port in Everett, completing a nine-month deployment in which it saw action in the Afghanistan War.

The big ship was slowly docking just before 11 a.m. Monday.

The Nimitz traveled 80,000 nautical miles mostly in the Pacific and Indian oceans since leaving Puget Sound at the end of March. It spent more than two months in direct support of the Afghanistan War. Its planes flew nearly 1,400 sorties in support of combat.

The deployment took the Nimitz as far as the Mediterranean Sea in November where the strike group conducted operations with NATO allies.
