TACOMA, Wash. —

A Tacoma woman who gave birth on the toilet and let her newborn die there has been sentenced to 10 years and three months in prison.

Melissa McMillen was sentenced Friday in Pierce County Superior Court. She was convicted of second-degree murder during a bench trial earlier this year.

Prosecutors had argued for a 40-year sentence, saying the death was intentional and thought out. They contend McMillen wanted to hide an unwanted pregnancy.

The News Tribune reports (http://is.gd/mdjmzW ) McMillen gave birth June 4, 2011, in the basement of her father's home. She left her daughter in the toilet for 90 minutes before placing the girl's body in a book bag and leaving it in the house for at least two days.

Defense attorney Anna Woods asked for a 5-year sentence, saying the 22-year-old client suffers from a condition called neonaticide syndrome.
