ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. —

Authorities say a school bus carrying children in New Mexico went off a road and lodged in an embankment but didn't roll over as initially reported.

The driver died at the scene of the crash that investigators say might have been caused by a medical event.

At least nine children from the tiny, rural school district of Mesa Vista were injured, including two with broken bones.

Rio Arriba County sheriff's spokesman Jake Arnold said the Mesa Vista school bus, carrying elementary, middle and high school students, crashed off State Road 111 near La Madera in Carson National Forest, a place popular for hunting, hiking and camping.
