A former chief executive of a Maryland county near Washington, D.C., has been sentenced to 30 days in jail for misconduct in office, which included having another county employee empty his urinary catheter bag.

John Leopold, a former Anne Arundel county executive who has back and urinary problems, was led handcuffed from sentencing Thursday to a detention center.

The judge also ordered the 70-year-old Republican to 30 days of home detention after jail time and to pay a $100,000 fine.

Leopold resigned last month after conviction on misconduct in office charges, which also included forcing members of his security detail to perform campaign work.

He apologized in court for his actions, adding it was insensitive to have an employee empty the catheter bag.

The judge called Leopold's conduct "outrageous."
