RIO DE JANEIRO —

Brazilian President Dilma Rousseff is inaugurating a naval shipyard in Rio de Janeiro state that will build five submarines, including one that is nuclear-propelled.

Rousseff's office says in a statement that the first submarine produced at the shipyard in the coastal city of Itaguai is slated for delivery in 2017. The nuclear vessel is to be the final one. It is to be launched in 2023.

Brazil's nearly $4 billion submarine program was developed in cooperation with France. It began in 2008.

Rousseff is also slated to visit a hospital and inaugurate the new Rio Art Museum during her visit to the city on Friday.
