German prosecutors say they have charged a 46-year-old Turkish man with membership in a terrorist organization on allegations he led the European finance operations of the banned Kurdistan Workers' Party.

Federal prosecutors said Tuesday that Abdullah S., whose last name was not released in accordance with privacy laws, was charged Jan. 23 and has been in custody since last April.

Using the alias Hamza, he's alleged to have run the PKK's finances in Europe from sometime after June 2007 to 2010.

The Kurdish group, also known as the PKK, has been fighting for self-rule in southeastern Turkey since 1984.
