MAKHACHKALA, Russia —

Russia's Interior Ministry says police have shot and killed a militant suspected of involvement in a 2010 double suicide bombing on the Moscow subway that killed 40 people.

Vyacheslav Gasanov, a spokesman for the ministry's branch in the Caucasus province of Dagestan, said Gusein Magomedov was killed in a security raid in the Sergokali region of Dagestan early Wednesday. Gasanov said he was shot by police after resisting arrest.

Magomedov was suspected of escorting one of the two female suicide bombers who blew themselves up in the subway during rush hour in March 2010.

Dagestan has become the epicenter of an Islamic insurgency that has spread through the Caucasus region after two separatist wars in Chechnya.
