QUITO, Ecuador —

President Rafael Correa of Ecuador says a decision has not yet been made on whether to grant political asylum to WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange.

Correa said via Twitter on Tuesday that a "rumor of asylum for Assange is false. A decision has not yet been made. I am awaiting a report from the Foreign Ministry."

Britain's Guardian newspaper had earlier quoted an unnamed Ecuadorean official as saying asylum had been granted for the Australian.

Assange took refuge in Ecuador's London embassy June 19 to avoid extradition to Sweden where he is wanted for questioning for alleged sexual misconduct.

Correa said Monday that he hoped to make a decision this week.
