Colombian prosecutors have freed a former regional lawmaker after ordering him jailed three months ago for allegedly helping leftist rebels plan the kidnapping of 11 colleagues who were later killed.

Sigifredo Lopez had also been kidnapped by FARC rebels in the 2002 raid on the regional assembly in Cali.

The case stupefied Colombians, as Lopez, now 49, spent seven year as a captive of rebels after the abduction.

Chief Prosecutor Eduardo Montealegre told reporters Tuesday without offering details that evidence favorable to Lopez had emerged.

Prosecutors initially said a video they obtained briefly shows in silhouette someone they believed to be Lopez offering detailed instructions for how to get safely in and out of the regional assembly building.
