MIAMI —

Tropical Storm Daniel is moving westward over the open waters of the eastern Pacific and is not a threat to land.

The storm's maximum sustained winds early Friday are near 65 mph (100 kph). The U.S. National Hurricane Center in Miami says the storm is expected to get stronger and could become a hurricane later in the day.

Daniel is centered about 640 miles (1,030 kilometers) south-southwest of the southern tip of Mexico's Baja California and is moving west near 14 mph (22 kph).
