TEHRAN, Iran —

Iran's foreign minister is warning Gulf Arab neighbors to avoid escalating regional tensions over a strategic island controlled by Iran but also claimed by the United Arab Emirates.

The semiofficial ISNA news agency quotes Ali Akbar Salehi as saying the dispute could become "very complicated" if Gulf states intensify their criticisms.

Monday's report came on the eve of a special meeting by the six-nation Gulf Cooperation Council, which includes the UAE, to discuss the latest flare-up over Abu Musa. The UAE and others have sharply denounced a visit last week to the island by Iran's President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad.

Salehi says Iran will never give up control of the Gulf island located between the UAE and Iran.
