NORTH CHARLESTON, S.C. —

Republican U.S. Sen. Jim DeMint of South Carolina says he has no plans to seek re-election in 2016.

But DeMint said Tuesday that he doesn't think being a lame duck means people won't listen to his calls for the U.S. to get its finances in order.

DeMint told reporters in North Charleston that he isn't ruling anything out. But he says he believes in term limits and plans to do something else after finishing two terms.

He says he might run if there is an extraordinary situation, but he did not say specifically what that situation might be. DeMint says he would like one of South Carolina's new congressmen to think about running for his seat.
