Thousands of people are gathering in downtown Cairo's Tahrir Square for a rally directed mainly against the country's military rulers.

Egypt's protest movement is calling Friday's protests a "second revolution" and wants the military to speed up the pace of democratic reform.

Mohamed ElBaradei, the Egyptian Nobel Peace Prize winner and a reform leader, said on Friday that he was "seriously concerned about the absence of security forces."

The ruling Armed Forces Council has warned that "dubious" elements may try to cause chaos during Friday's protests. The army says it will stay clear of the protest area to avoid any friction.
