For The Associated Press
The low pressure system that brought active weather to areas from the Upper Great Lakes through parts of New England and the northern Mid-Atlantic will lift northeastward Thursday.
Wrap around wind from this low will fuel snow showers from northern New York through northern Maine during the morning. Winter storm warnings and winter weather advisories will remain in effect for northern and western Maine through the start of the day. These areas should expect 5 to 9 inches of snow by the early morning and up to a tenth of an inch of ice accumulation. To the south, more active weather will develop near an associated cold front that will stretch through the Gulf Coast States into Texas. Scattered showers and thunderstorms are expected from the Central and Southern Plains through much of the Southeast as the frontal boundary stalls by the afternoon. A moist, warm, and unstable near this front will create a slight risk for severe weather development with large hail from parts of the Southern Plains through the Mid-Mississippi Valley.
In the West, a cold front will spread showers and high elevation snow across the western interior to the Rockies. Behind this front, colder air will move into the Pacific Northwest, leading to lower snow levels.
Temperatures in the Lower 48 states Wednesday ranged from a morning low of 1 degree at Yellowstone, Wyo., to a high of 97 degrees at Laredo, Texas.
