Strong earthquake strikes off Papua New Guinea
A strong earthquake has struck off the coast of Papua New Guinea. There are no immediate reports of damage or injuries and no tsunami alert was issued.

A strong earthquake has struck off the coast of Papua New Guinea. There are no immediate reports of damage or injuries and no tsunami alert was issued.
The U.S. Geological Survey says the 6.6-magnitude quake struck Thursday 17 miles (27 kilometers) northeast of the town of Kandrian on the island of New Britain, at a depth of 27 miles (43 kilometers).
The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center said no tsunami was expected.
The Pacific island nation of Papua New Guinea lies on the "Ring of Fire" - an arc of earthquake and volcanic zones that stretches around the Pacific Rim and where about 90 percent of the world's quakes occur.
