MOGADISHU, Somalia —

A medical official says at least three civilians were killed after being caught in clashes between insurgents and the army in Somalia's chaotic capital.

Mogadishu ambulance service chief Ali Muse said Saturday another 12 people were wounded by stray bullets, including four women.

Mogadishu residents live through frequent barrages of mortars and rockets during fighting between insurgents - such as fighters from al-Shabab, the country's most powerful militant group - and government forces.

Islamic militants have been waging an insurgency for more than a three years to topple the fragile, U.N.-backed government that controls a small slice of the capital.

Somalia has not had an effective government since warlords toppled the last government in 1991.
