ATLANTA —

An Army family's dog that escaped from an Atlanta airport just before Christmas while being sent from San Diego to Germany has been found dead.

Nala, an 8-year-old German shepherd, disappeared Dec. 22.

Delta Air Lines, which was transporting the dog, said Nala apparently was hit by a car. A spokeswoman said the airline will donate $1,000 to Atlanta Pet Rescue in Nala's memory.

Owner Alisa Miller had planned to spend Christmas with her husband, Brian, a U.S. Army officer stationed in Frankfurt, but came to Atlanta hoping to finding Nala. After failing to find her, Miller departed for Germany on Dec. 30.

Delta reported a few sightings of Nala near Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport. The body was found Saturday alongside Interstate 75.
