An overnight fire that destroyed a barn in central Massachusetts has killed some 200 chickens.

BERLIN, Mass. —

An overnight fire that destroyed a barn in central Massachusetts has killed some 200 chickens.

The blaze erupted at about 1:30 a.m. Monday in Berlin.

Owner Richard Larssen tells the Telegram & Gazette that he sold eggs at a small farm stand on the property, which he has owned for about 35 years.

Fire departments from several local communities helped battle the blaze and provide water since Berlin doesn't have a hydrant system.

Larssen says the barn had a heating lamp for the chickens. Fire officials have not yet determined the cause of the blaze.
