BILLINGS, Mont. —

Doctors for former Montana Sen. Conrad Burns have upgraded his condition from critical to serious as he recovers from a stroke he suffered last week.

A spokeswoman for Georgetown University Hospital in Washington, D.C. says three-term Republican senator's condition was upgraded Monday morning. He was hospitalized last Wednesday after his wife found him disoriented at their home in Arlington, Va.

Since losing a bid for a fourth term three years ago, Burns has worked for the lobbying firm Gage Business Consulting. Friends say he had recently bought a house in Billings and was in the process of moving back to Montana.
