MOSS LANDING, Calif. —

The former president of the Monterey Bay Aquarium Research Institute will be taking over as the new director of the U.S. Geological Survey.

Marcia McNutt was confirmed Wednesday by the U.S. Senate, becoming the first woman to lead the scientific agency.

The 57-year-old McNutt is taking over an agency with 8,670 employees and a $1.1 billion budget.

During her 12 years at the aquarium, McNutt was credited with directing a number of successful programs, including the launch of the first deep-sea cabled observatory in the continental U.S.

McNutt said she expects to assume her duties in Washington next month.
