Maine woman pleads no contest to making a false report about being held hostage

A 33-year-old Maine woman who claimed to be held hostage in her home has pleaded no contest to making a false report.

LEWISTON, Maine —

A 33-year-old Maine woman who claimed to be held hostage in her home has pleaded no contest to making a false report.

Police surrounded Renee Cartier's mobile home in Lisbon in January after she called them claiming that three men had been holding her hostage for 2½ days and that she had been sexually assaulted.

After investigating the case, police said Cartier had been out cashing checks at the time she said she was detained and that there was no evidence she was sexually assaulted.

Cartier pleaded no contest Wednesday in Lewiston District Court. She was placed on administrative release — a form of nonreporting probation — for one year with conditions that include undergoing treatment for substance abuse.
