Tangipahoa Parish sheriff's deputies have arrested a Hammond mother after she left her two children inside a car with a large German shepherd while she shopped at Wal-Mart.
Shortly after being called to the scene late Monday night, deputies found an infant screaming and an older child frantically trying to call on a cell phone in the Wal-Mart parking lot in Hammond.
Two women arrived minutes later and the mother walked to the driver's side door and tried to enter the car.
Once questioned, the mother, 22-year-old Angelina Guthrie, told deputies she did not think it was against the law to leave her children in the car and felt it was OK because she left them her cell phone.
Guthrie was booked on two counts of child desertion.
