From bad boy to "No-No Boy"

If you missed Malcolm McDowell introducing his debut film "If ... " at the Port Townsend Film Festival last fall, you can now catch the movie (alas, without McDowell in person) at the Grand Illusion this week. Directed by Lindsay Anderson, who would go on to make "O Lucky Man!" and "The Whales of August," it's the 1968 tale of a rebellious pupil (McDowell, then in his mid-20s) who leads a revolution at his upscale English prep school. Northwest Film Forum this week presents a 40th anniversary screening of D.A. Pennebaker's "Don't Look Back," a film documenting 23-year-old Bob Dylan's 1965 concert tour of England. Pennebaker, still an active filmmaker, was an Oscar nominee in 1993 for "The War Room," a documentary about Bill Clinton's presidential campaign. The documentary "In Search of No-No Boy," about Seattle native John Okada and his post-internment novel "No-No Boy," will have a free work-in-progress screening on Saturday at 2 p.m. at Seattle Public Library's Columbia Branch, 4721 Rainier Ave. S., Seattle. And tonight, the Northwest Screenwriters Guild will present a lecture and Q&A from Blake Snyder, author of "Save the Cat: The Last Book on Screenwriting You'll Ever Need." Snyder has a 20-year career as a screenwriter (his work includes "Blank Check" and "Stop! Or My Mom Will Shoot") and producer. He'll speak at 7 p.m. at the Clear Channel Building, 351 Elliott Ave. W., Seattle; free parking is available at the CTI parking lot one block north.
