Sunday Best: Gugu Mbatha-Raw is the Belle of the big screen
Gugu Mbatha-Raw will be the Belle of the big screen next week, wearing 18th-century costumes by designer Anushia Nieradzik.

Nothing quite like a hat and a parasol and a fan on a hot day, right? Costume-drama lovers have a treat in store this week: “Belle,” the based-on-fact story of the illegitimate mixed-raced daughter of a Royal Navy admiral in 18th-century England, opens in theaters Friday and brings with it a flurry of elaborate frocks. This luscious purple gown, created by costume designer Anushia Nieradzik and worn beautifully by Gugu Mbatha-Raw as Belle, looks like it features a pannier (side-hoop) skirt, a popular look at the time that made gowns flatter in front and back while voluminous on the sides. I love the ribbon trim, the all-lace hat — and the way that nobody can stand too close.
