Tina Fey’s style: no funny business, just glamour

Stylist Cristina Ehrlich talks about the fashion savvy of one of her clients, Tina Fey, who with Amy Poehler will co-host the Golden Globe Awards Jan. 12.

WHO: Tina Fey

SHOW: The Golden Globe Awards — she, along with Amy Poehler, is a host for the second consecutive year, airing at 5 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 12, on NBC — and “30 Rock.”

BACKGROUND: She is known for her work on “Saturday Night Live” (her rendition of Sarah Palin, for example) and also for comedic hits like “30 Rock,” “Mean Girls” and “Bossypants,” a best-selling autobiography. Fey, 43, has a shelf full of accolades, including Emmy, Golden Globe, Screen Actors Guild and Writers Guild awards.

BEHIND THE SCENES: She has been working with Cristina Ehrlich, who also styles Amy Adams and Allison Williams, for the last four years.

HER LOOKS: “Tina is a petite woman, and it’s all about how things fit her,” Ehrlich said. “We do try to mix it up, but it’s always from the mentality of a corseted feel or a fit that shows off her curves. We err on the side of sexy.”

Appreciate, for example, the sweetheart strapless neckline of the embroidered L’Wren Scott dress in Chantilly lace Fey wore last year to the Golden Globes. (For this year’s Globes wardrobe, expect several outfits from a single designer, said Ehrlich, who is “a big believer of one-stop shopping.”) She also went strapless with a black belted style by Oscar de la Renta to the Screen Actors Guild awards a couple of weeks later.

With awards season behind her, Fey chose sleek separates in March, like a black leather shell with relaxed peplum and houndstooth skirt, both by J. Mendel, for the New York premiere of “Admission.”

“We were playing with textures,” Ehrlich said. “There is also something about Tina and all her choices that has a real ’50s feel to it, and you can see that here.” The peplum popped up again with Oscar de la Renta (“a little black dress that’s got an Audrey style to it,” Ehrlich said) for a “30 Rock” event the same month.

By September, Fey was ready for a jolt of color, wearing a showstopping Narciso Rodriguez gown in vivid cobalt to the Emmys. “She really wanted to go with a designer she hadn’t worn before,” Ehrlich said. “He’s not necessarily your corseting type of guy, but he has such precision with line. We were very specific on where we wanted the straps, like a halter.”

But she didn’t stay away from de la Renta long, wearing his tea-length frock in black lace in October at the Mark Twain Prize for American Humor gala.

“Lace reads beautifully on Tina,” Ehrlich said. “It can be a tricky fabric, sometimes fusty, but it’s fresh and feminine on her. She loves a lace sleeve.” There was a hint of lace, as well, in the black and white print Carolina Herrera cocktail number she wore to the American Museum of Natural History gala the next month.

For something of a palate cleanser, Fey rounded out the year in cargo pants and New Balance sneakers at an Off-Broadway opening night party (“That’s totally her style and her real New York street look,” Ehrlich said), and black leather leggings by J Brand, an Alexander Wang silk blouse and an Oscar de la Renta car coat at the “Anchorman 2” premiere.

“We have so many gowns coming up, it was a nice change,” Ehrlich said. “Besides, the thing about Tina is that her fashion is going to be strong, but her humor is going to be stronger.”
