Looking for a break from real-life politics? Tuesday brings "The Campaign," as well as other comedies, including "Safety Not Guaranteed" and "Ruby Sparks." Star ratings are by Seattle Times movie reviewers, freelancers or wire services. For full reviews, search the movie title at seattletimes.com.

4 stars "Ruby Sparks" (R): A novelist (Paul Dano) with writer's block creates a charming young woman who turns up, in person (Zoe Kazan), at his door. The romantic comedy shifts more to the dramatic side in the final third, says Seattle Times movie critic Moira Macdonald, "and you watch mesmerized; there's no way to know where this wonderfully original film is going, except that you don't want it to end."

3.5 stars "Safety Not Guaranteed" (R): In Colin Trevorrow's made-in-the-Northwest comedy, several Seattle Magazine employees (Jake Johnson, Aubrey Plaza, Karan Soni) go out in search of a classified ad's author (Mark Duplass), intrigued by what he wrote: "WANTED. Someone to travel back in time with me. This is not a joke."

3.5 stars "First Position" (not rated; suitable for general audiences): Bess Kargman's documentary follows a half-dozen talented ballet dancers as they take a big leap — competing in the prestigious Youth America Grand Prix.

2.5 stars "The Campaign" (R): It's political satire vs. low-rent comedy in this film starring Will Ferrell and Zach Galifianakis as candidates vying for a congressional seat in North Carolina.

"Americano" (not rated; for mature audiences): After his mother's death, a man (Mathieu Demy) gets drawn into aspects of her life that he knew nothing about. Salma Hayek co-stars.
