Tuesday's new DVD releases go from "big things" (in "Prometheus") to big hair ("Rock of Ages"). Star ratings are by Seattle Times movie reviewers, freelancers or wire services. For full reviews, search the movie title at seattletimes.com.
"A Cat in Paris" (PG): This Oscar-nominated French tale, in hand-drawn animation, tells the story of a cat that leads a double life — by day, he lives with a little girl whose mother is a detective searching for her husband's killer; by night, he slinks out to work with a big-hearted cat burglar. The voice cast includes Marcia Gay Harden, Anjelica Huston and Matthew Modine.
"Prometheus" (R): In Ridley Scott's prequel/not-prequel to "Alien," a clue to the origins of humankind leads a team of explorers on a journey into deep space. Noomi Rapace, Michael Fassbender and Charlize Theron star.
"The Raven" (R): John Cusack, playing Edgar Allan Poe, helps solve a series of crimes based on his own writings.
"Rock of Ages" (R): Julianne Hough and Diego Boneta star as two young dreamers seeking fame in 1987 Los Angeles. But cute as they are, says Seattle Times movie critic Moira Macdonald, they melt away whenever any of their elders turn up. Alec Baldwin and Russell Brand, as a music-club owner and his tech guy, "have an effortlessly funny chemistry"; Tom Cruise, as rock god Stacee Jaxx, "struts through the movie with his chest so puffed out he's practically an apostrophe"; and Catherine Zeta-Jones, as a politician's wife, "munches the scenery like Skittles."
