Microsoft shutting Encarta encyclopedia
Microsoft said it will cease its Encarta encyclopedia later this year, citing changes in the way customers seek and consume information.
Microsoft said it will cease its Encarta encyclopedia later this year, citing changes in the way customers seek and consume information.
Most MSN Encarta Web sites will shut down on Oct. 31, the company said Monday on its Web site. Microsoft will stop selling software versions after June.
Encarta, which helped end the era of print encyclopedias, is losing importance as more users employ search engines and community-driven sites like Wikipedia to find information. Microsoft is pouring billions of dollars into a bid to improve its search engine as it tries to narrow the gap with leader Google.
Microsoft also has been looking for ways to trim costs, including eliminating products and cutting jobs, as the economy worsens.
