Now is a good time to salute Tay Sean, the young producer, rapper and singer from Beacon Hill who shines his musical light through prisms of West Coast synthesizer funk and hip-hop. He's wrangled a tightknit quartet over the years, which he's calling Kingdom Crumbs: Mikey Nice, Jarv Dee, Jerm D, Tay Sean. Their debut self-titled album, produced almost entirely by Tay Sean, is a cool half hour of sci-fi tinged hip-hop. For best results start with "Both Sides of My Brain," "Ridin on the Strength," "The Mezzanine," "Freedom Song" and explore the rest from there. The album operates under the ethos that vibe rules all, unraveling into lounge singing at the edges, with vocalists stunting, presiding, yelling and crooning. It's a total experience. Even the freestyle chant "Light It Up" (prod. 10.4 Rog) and shout-out portion "And My Drink Will Be" are important.
