Commentary: Frank Ocean cover songs

Listen/read about Frank Ocean's "Thinkin Bout You" here

As Frank Ocean's low-key masterpiece "Channel Orange" album continues to cross over from R&B/hip-hop and filter its way through music in general, we have a new cover from the indiesphere by Vancouver musician Nicholas Krgovich and Nite Jewel, from Los Angeles. Their faithful rendition of "Thinkin Bout You" tackles the issue of how to sing Ocean's high-pitched chorus, with Krgovich crooning the verses and the Nite Jewel handling the chorus in her light soprano voice. It's not earth-shattering but I like the arrangement, how they sing octaves apart, and how they do it individually at first, then duet at the end. The low-tech-sounding synthesizers work nicely, especially the fake orchestra stab. But really what this cover represents to me is how fun the song is to sing and play. To put it lightly, Frank Ocean's got super-coverable songs. You can be a crap piano player or a good one and not disturb the integrity of the piece.

It makes me wonder what other musicians will cover "Channel Orange" tracks. I think a mainstream country cover of "Bad Religion" would flip America upside down.
