Ben Gibbard's Ichiro song, and other memories
Ben Gibbard, leader of Seattle band Death Cab for Cutie, wrote "Ichiro's Theme" in honor of the Mariners' all-star outfielder Ichiro Suzuki — who was traded to the New York Yankees on Monday. Gibbard said via Twitter that he wrote the song years ago but decided to share it now.
"Ichiro's Theme" by Ben Gibbard
Ichiro is something of a rock star (goes by his first name, for instance) and as a fan I've loved sitting at Safeco Field, marveling at him slap-hitting homeruns and throwing baseballs on "frozen ropes," as Gibbard sings. I will remember his time in Seattle by his gameplay. I will also remember his great book of aphorisms compiled by local author David Shields, "The Understated Ichiro," and namesake bubble tea at Ambrosia Café in the International District: blueberry yogurt with tapioca.
Farewell, Ichiro.
