"Jet Preung Srawlanh" by Mao Sareth

Flitting between his hometown Seattle and Reed College in Portland, student/musician Ben Funkhouser digs deep for music and thinks about it hard. I'm a fan of his pop-rock band Hausu, and try to catch up with the young king whenever I can because he's a music encyclopedia with the right attitude: anti-snobby and blown away by all the beauty in the world. That energy defines "206, 425, 253, 360," the mix he assembled for my blog while in town on winter break. Download it by clicking the link at the top of this post. Below that, listen to a Bjork song from Funkhouser's mix you might have heard and a Mao Sareth song you almost certainly have not. Read a recent interview with Funkhouser on Cairo's blog here.

Description of "206, 425, 253, 360":

Mostly Ethiopian and Eritrean 'soul'/pop stuff, pre-Khmer Rouge Cambodian pop (1960s), minimal synth and a few other random tracks thrown in. Agyeman is Ghanaian highlife, Lee Moses is an American soul-man from Georgia, Grauzone were Switzerland's great post-punk hope after Kleenex/Lilliput in the 80s. Dariush Dolat-Shahi is an Iranian composer. Most of these tracks have been found by hardcore nerding, but a few of the Horn (of Africa) tracks can be found on various Ethiopiques compilations.
