Seattle hiphop storytelling: Grynch and P Smoov should work together more (UPDATED)
Posted by Andrew Matson
Here we have "You're On" by Grynch, the rapping King of Ballard, owner of Seattle's most famous Volvo. In the song, Grynch tells an autobiographical story that starts backstage 20 minutes before showtime and ends with someone telling him "You're on!"
The future-shock backdrop on "You're On" is by local man P Smoov and can be found on his new "Face Scrunchers Vol. 1" release. "Face Scrunchers" is 39 minutes of all-caps ADHD synth-rap instrumentals, one after another, most lasting around a minute and a half. Download it here.
"You're On" is short—just a verse, really—but indicates Grynch and P Smoov should work together more. Storytelling is turning out to be the best part of Grynch's rap game. He establishes scenery clearly and doesn't rush plot-advancement. Even if his story goes nowhere, as "You're On" doesn't, it's fun to listen to.
Smoov's track quiets down and builds up quickly, pauses, explodes. His style is intense, but, like Grynch, he cares to tell a story.
I love the countdown in "You're On." While Grynch waits backstage, P Smoov makes the beat sound like it's happening inside the listener's eyes. With every minute that passes, the track seems to blink, blacking out a little.
UPDATE: P Smoov hit me on Twitter and then emailed the full song. Grynch raps another verse, and takes the plot of his story on an odd little flashback journey. Smoov lets the beat ride out at the end, lets it soak in. Thoroughly satisfying experience, listening to this song.
