Fresh Espresso - "Lazerbeams" (live at KEXP)

Posted by Andrew Matson

While I review the new release by Seattle's finest afronautical, gay-positive, jazz-hop group -- Thee Satisfaction's "Snow Motion" -- I present you with Fresh Espresso performing "Lazerbeams" live at KEXP.

The song is oil and vinegar. Producer/rapper/singer P Smoov's sound bed is engorged synths, totally warm and bloated, totally hogging the sonic space. That's the oil. Then the tambourine beat cuts it, then Smoov's icy vocoder hook, then Rik Rude's great verses ("foot on fire / the way I kick out heat"), then Smoov's dracula keys breakdown saws through the whole thing. That's the vinegar.

Fresh Espresso is a good combination. Can't wait to see the show tonight at Mural Amphitheatre in Seattle Center. Starts at 5:00 p.m. Free.
