Smoak hits pair of homers, but Rainiers routed anyway

Justin Smoak hit a pair of home runs, but it was not enough to save the Tacoma Rainiers from a 10-4 loss to the Salt Lake Bees in a Pacific Coast League game on Wednesday night.

SALT LAKE CITY — Justin Smoak hit a pair of home runs, but it was not enough to save the Tacoma Rainiers from a 10-4 loss to the Salt Lake Bees in a Pacific Coast League game on Wednesday night.

Smoak staked Tacoma to a 2-0 lead with a two-run homer in the top of the first inning. Salt Lake responded with four runs in the bottom of the first inning and three more in the second to take a 7-2 lead.

Rainiers starter Andrew Carraway was battered, allowing eight earned runs in 21/3 innings. His earned-run average ballooned to 5.89.

Smoak also homered in the sixth inning and is 8 for 15 over his past three games.

The host AquaSox rolled to a Northwest League victory.
