Justin Smoak has four hits and drives in two runs for Rainiers
SALT LAKE CITY — Jesus Montero struck out on a foul tip with the tying run on base as the Tacoma Rainiers’ late rally came up a run short in a 6-5 defeat Monday against Salt Lake.
The Rainiers (42-48) entered the ninth inning down 6-2 against the Bees (37-55), but then scored runs on a double by Gabriel Noriega, a ground out by Justin Smoak and a single by Stefan Romero before Montero struck out.
Smoak went 4 for 5 and drove in two runs for the Rainiers. Romero and Chris Taylor each had three of Tacoma’s 14 hits.
