Prospect watch

John Hicks

Catcher, Class AA Jackson Generals

Selected in the fourth round of the 2011 amateur draft out of the University of Virginia.

Hicks is considered to be one of the best defensive catchers in the organization. He’s got a cannon for an arm and is athletic enough that he can play left field in a pinch. After putting up solid numbers at Class A High Desert in 2012, Hicks struggled last season in Jackson, hitting .236 with a .632 OPS. A groin injury cost him part of the season, and he played in just 80 games. His defense was still stellar. He threw out 35 of 71 base stealer. He’s having a bounce-back season. Hicks is in the midst of a 10-game hit streak, when he’s batting .421 (16 for 38) with three doubles, a triple and home run with seven runs batted in. For the season, Hicks is hitting .294 with a .757 OPS in 28 games.

Ex-Mariner of the week

Ichiro

Outfielder, New York Yankees

It’s a new role for the one-time Seattle hit machine. He’s been relegated to a bench player. He’s appeared in 35 games for the Yankees, but only 15 of those were starts. These days he gets maybe an at-bat per game if lucky. Usually, he plays as a defensive replacement late in games or as a pinch-runner. He’s been effective in this new role. He’s hitting .369 (24 for 65) with four doubles, three runs batted in with three stolen bases. Ichiro, 40, has 2,766 career hits. Will he continue to play to reach the 3,000 mark?
