Prospect, ex-Mariner of Week

Prospect watch

Austin Wilson

OF, Class A Clinton LumberKings

Selected in the second round of the 2013 amateur draft out of Stanford.

When the Mariners selected Wilson in the second round, they figured they were getting first-round talent. The slugging outfielder saw his draft stock drop in his last year at Stanford after an elbow injury slowed his production. Wilson is a menacing physical presence at 6 feet 4, 250 pounds and possesses tremendous power. It’s starting to show. He was recently named Midwest League player of the week, hitting .375 (9 for 24) with six runs scored, three doubles, a triple, two home runs and 11 runs batted in in seven games. For the season, Wilson is hitting .303 (30 for 99) with seven doubles, a triple, three homers and 24 RBI in 28 games.

Ex-Mariner of the week

Michael Morse

OF, San Francisco

Morse had two tours with the Mariners, the most recent last season when Seattle acquired him to be a middle-of-the-order presence. Instead, he was more of a presence on the disabled list. He hit just .215 with 13 homers and 27 RBI in 76 games before being traded to the Orioles in September. Morse signed a one- year deal with the Giants in the offseason and is flourishing as the starting left fielder. He’s hitting .286 (32 for 112) with eight doubles, eight homers, 24 RBI and a .907 on-base plus slugging percentage in 32 games.
