BALTIMORE — For the third straight game, shortstop Brendan Ryan was held out of the Mariners' lineup on Tuesday. He has a sore left elbow from being hit by Yankee pitcher Hiroki Kuroda.

Manager Eric Wedge had hoped to start Ryan against Baltimore's left-handed pitcher, Zach Britton, but Ryan's elbow was still too swollen for him to play.

"They're doing everything they can to get him over it, but he still doesn't have enough range of motion," Wedge said. "He's not ready to play yet. I think we're close, but he still has a lot of inflammation."

Munenori Kawasaki made his third straight start at shortstop in place of Ryan, who remains day-to-day.

• Wedge said left-hander Charlie Furbush, who gave up a run in an inning in his second rehab appearance for Tacoma on Monday, still isn't ready to come up. Furbush has been on the disabled list since July 18 with a strained left triceps.

• The Mariners' 3-1 loss on Monday snapped their seven-game winning streak in games decided by two or fewer runs.
