FSN Northwest will become ROOT Sports on Friday

FSN Northwest, the network that covers Mariners games and Pac-12 sports, will change its name to ROOT TV, but will still be found on same channels.

The name changes for regional sports TV network FSN Northwest on Friday, but that's about it.

The cable network that is the home of the Mariners, as well as Pac-12 football and basketball games and numerous other sports, on Friday will become known as ROOT Sports.

Its debut coincides with the first Mariners regular-season game of the year Friday night in Oakland.

But other than the name, which the company says is being changed to reflect the networks' "new approach," fans might not notice much else all that different.

In a news release, the company said that ROOT Sports will be available on the same channels and on all the same cable, satellite and television service providers that carried FSN Northwest.

FSN Pittsburgh and FSN Rocky Mountain, also regional sports networks, are also changing their names to ROOT Sports on Friday.

While the stations were once owned by News Corp., which owns Fox, they no longer are, now under the control of DIRECTV Sports Networks.

The name change is part of an overall re-branding effort for the new company and signifies the network's philosophy to make it clear it hopes the home teams do well.
