Young Cy Young winners

The Mariners' Felix Hernandez became the 10th pitcher to win a Cy Young award before his 25th birthday.

Last season, the Mariners' Felix Hernandez became the 10th pitcher to win the Cy Young award before turning 25. A look at the others:

Dean Chance

Age Year W-L ERA IP H BB SO
LA Angels 23 1964 20-9 1.65 278.1 194 86 207
Season after 24 1965 15-10 3.15 225.2 197 101 164

Chance was in his third full season in 1964. He pitched 11 games in relief, in addition to his 35 starts, and had four saves. Pitched 15 complete games, 11 of those shutouts. He won 20 games in 1967 with the Twins, his only other All-Star season.

1 Career Cy Young award

Denny McLain

Age Year W-L ERA IP H BB SO
Detroit 24 1968 31-6 1.96 336.0 241 63 280
Season after 25 1969 24-9 2.80 325.0 288 67 181

McLain is the last pitcher to win 30 games, doing it in his fourth full major-league season. He shared the Cy Young the following year with Baltimore's Mike Cuellar but was out of baseball by 1972, with a bad arm and legal issues that landed him in jail.

2 Career Cy Young awards

Tom Seaver

Age Year W-L ERA IP H BB SO
Mets 24 1969 25-7 2.21 273.1 202 82 208
Season after 25 1970 18-12 2.82 290.2 230 83 283

Tom Terrific completed 18 of his 36 starts in 1969, his third season. It was the second of nine straight seasons of at least 200 strikeouts. The Hall of Famer won 311 games and struck out 3,640 hitters in a 20-year career that ended in 1986.

3 Career Cy Young awards

Vida Blue

Age Year W-L ERA IP H BB SO
Oakland 22 1971 24-8 1.82 312.0 209 88 301
Season after 23 1972 6-10 2.80 151.0 117 48 111

Blue threw an astounding 24 complete games and 312 innings in his first full major-league season. Blue was never as good again as he was as a 22-year-old, though he did win 20 games two more seasons and finished with 209 career wins.

Fernando Valenzuela

Age Year W-L ERA IP H BB SO
Dodgers 20 1981 13-7 2.48 192.1 140 61 180
Season after 21 1982 19-13 2.87 285.0 247 83 199

The rookie left-hander threw a shutout on Opening Day as the Dodgers' emergency starter, then won his next seven starts, four more by shutout. He finished in the top five in Cy Young voting in 1982, '85 and '86 and won 173 games in a 17-year career.

1 Career Cy Young award

Bret Saberhagen

Age Year W-L ERA IP H BB SO
Kansas City 21 1985 20-6 2.87 235.1 211 38 158
Season after 22 1986 7-12 4.15 156.0 165 29 112

Saberhagen's heavy workload in 1985, his second season, might have contributed to his struggles in 1986. But he did win another Cy Young with the Royals in 1989, going 23-6 with a 2.16 ERA, and finished a 16-year career with a record of 167-117.

2 Career Cy Young awards

Dwight Gooden

Age Year W-L ERA IP H BB SO
Mets 20 1985 24-4 1.53 276.2 198 69 268
Season after 21 1986 17-6 2.84 250.0 197 80 200

Gooden, who was plagued by alcohol abuse and drug addiction, never matched his unbelievable second season. In fact his second-best year was probably his rookie season, when he won 17 games and struck out a career-high 276 hitters as a 19-year-old.

1 Career Cy Young award

Roger Clemens

Age Year W-L ERA IP H BB SO
Boston 24 1986 24-4 2.48 254.0 179 67 238
Season after 25 1987 20-9 2.97 281.2 248 83 256

The 24 wins were a career high in 1986, Clemens' third season in Boston but his first full season. Clemens went on to win 354 games and six more Cy Young awards in what would be a certain Hall of Fame career, if not for the steroid allegations.

7 Career Cy Young awards

Tim Lincecum

Age Year W-L ERA IP H BB SO
SanFrancisco 24 2008 18-5 2.62 227.0 182 84 265
Season after 25 2009 15-7 2.48 225.1 168 68 261

The Liberty High of Issaquah grad and former Washington Huskies star pitched well after being called up in May 2007, then dominated National League hitters in 2008. He followed that with another Cy Young season and is one of baseball's best pitchers.

2 Career Cy Young awards

Felix Hernandez

Age Year W-L ERA IP H BB SO
Mariners 24 2010 13-12 2.27 249.2 194 70 232

King Felix was rewarded by Cy Young voters who realized his win total was not an accurate reflection of his brilliance last season. Hernandez, who turns 25 in April, already has 71 wins after five-plus seasons in the Mariners' rotation.

Notes: Ages listed are for the pitcher on the last day of the season; the Cy Young was awarded beginning in 1956. There was only one award given for 11 seasons. Beginning in 1967, a winner was named in each league.
